Much More Than Artificial Intelligence

While artificial intelligence is consolidating today as a disruptive technology that will define an era, it is important to recognize that its roots stretch far back in time. I would say it represents the blooming of many seeds sown in our past—not only within the realm of technology or computing power, but within the evolution of human knowledge itself.

Over time, the world has provided us with the very foundations for this development: the deep roots of mathematics, numbers, and the theories that great minds of every era deciphered and translated into insight. Even without the resources needed to prove them in their own time, many of those ideas laid down groundwork that could later be realized thanks to greater technical capacity.

Never before have we created something so akin to ourselves. We come from a history of breakthroughs involving inert machines and objects that we, through human intervention, shape and give purpose to. Artificial intelligence, by contrast, emerges from multiple converging rivers: mathematics, hardware, software, statistics, and various other disciplines.

We are facing a technology that can feel human, even if it is not—and should not be compared to—a person. By speaking to us, appearing to reason, and challenging our own talents, artificial intelligence seems to transcend a simple mathematical result or a mechanical device. Like other monumental discoveries before it, it may well become the cornerstone of even more extraordinary developments in the future.

We cannot predict what that future will look like, nor when it will arrive. Yet, what we are capable of perceiving in this new technology today is already breathtaking.

This invites us to challenge ourselves. As human beings, we have always moved forward through curiosity and the ability to invent. We have observed nature, identified its patterns, and combined those findings with our knowledge to drive progress across every field.

Artificial intelligence challenges us because never before has something been created with such a striking ability to compete with our creativity. In a way, it compels us to preserve and strengthen our capacity for analysis, our creative drive, and our ability to recognize the signals in the world that are still waiting to be translated into useful knowledge for society.

In the era of artificial intelligence, these human capabilities do not lose relevance; on the contrary, they become all the more vital. If AI can assist us in tasks of analysis, calculation, or content generation, it remains the duty of human beings to retain the initiative to ask questions, define purpose, and use these tools with intention, responsibility, and a vision for the future.
